People who have these items in their house are rich, according to the internet

A home isn’t just a basic human right: it’s also a status symbol, and stepping into someone’s humble abode for the first time can tell you a lot about them — and their bank account.

As the saying goes, if you want to know me, come and live with me. And Reddit users have been doing just that: reminiscing about the items that made them realise their friends were richer than they initially thought.

Smeg appliances, AGA ovens and combined fridge-freezers with those fancy ice dispensers might spring to mind. But some people have even swankier possessions, as a thread in the AskReddit channel reveals.

‘My friend’s dad was an oil tycoon. He had a T-Rex skeleton in his hallway,’ @295DVRKSS penned, an answer which @bobbymac555555 reckoned was a worthy ‘winner.’

‘A copy of Architectural Digest Magazine with their house on the cover,’ @Bigbird_Elephant joked, while for @LittleKitty235, the realisation came with the ‘Monet in their office.’

However, it’s not always what you’ve got on display that indicates wealth – sometimes, it’s what you hide away, as @Soctter1969 argued that ‘if they’re REALLY rich, then that Monet you saw was a $30,000 forgery/replica, and the real one is in the vault.’

This has long been a subject of contention, as a previous thread in the @Less_Understanding77 debated.

For @Subject_Yard5652, the key indicator was ‘a refrigerator door that blends into the cabinets,’ while @AsterismRaptor suggested it was ‘heated tiles in the bathroom.’

@Reading_Otter controversially argued that the answer was relatively simple: ‘in this economy, having a house at all. Not a rental, or a condo.’

It’s not only these items the internet has been theorising about when it comes to subtle indications of financial health.

Ever heard of ‘bookshelf wealth’? When it comes to home décor choices, bookshelves are often a focal point – and you can tell a lot about a person purely from the contents of theirs.

‘Bookshelf Wealth is a whole home vibe,’ San Diego-based interior designer @houseofhive explained in a TikTok video.

‘What separates this from other design styles is that these homes look cosy and lived in.

‘So obviously there’s books, but the difference is that these aren’t display books. These are books that have actually been curated and read.’

But it isn’t just books that are displayed intentionally: it’s art, too (and it isn’t presented in a traditional way).

‘It’s hung in front of bookcases, displayed on the floor, literally overlapping each other, definitely not hung in a straight line, and is fully disregarding the bounds of the wall molding.’
