Bad news for soap fans, as ITV has axed the reality programme Drama Queens after one season.

The series from ITV and Lime Pictures took viewers behind the drama that happens on-screen to offer a glimpse of what some of soap’s most recognisable actresses go through on a daily basis while working on the nation’s biggest TV shows.

The programme featured a host of stars from Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street and provided backstage access to the make-up room, family get-togethers and even a peek at the Strictly Come Dancing tour via the eyes of Ellie Leach.

A source shared: ‘Drama Queens was launched amid a lot of excitement and fanfare, but proved logistically quite difficult and expensive to make.

They added to The Sun: ‘Plus the soap fanbase didn’t translate to automatic audiences as reality viewers tend to be quite a younger demographic.

‘In the end producers decided it was best to leave it as a one off series and focus on new projects and trial new formats.’

An ITV spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘There are no current plans for a second series of Drama Queens but the first series is available for viewers to enjoy on ITVX, and we wouldn’t rule out revisiting the show in the future.’

Storylines on the show included Faye Windass actress Ellie opening up about her struggle with self-confidence.

Since leaving Coronation Street, where she played Faye Windass for 12 years, Ellie’s career has gone from strength to strength, with the actress winning the 21st series of Strictly alongside partner Vito Coppola.

Ellie admitted that she’ll always miss Corrie, where she started working at the age of 11.

Strictly winner Ellie Leach also opened up about her time on the show (Pictuer

When co-star Lucy Fallon, who plays Bethany Platt, asked if she missed her previous place of work when reuniting with her co-stars, Ellie said: ‘I think I’ll always miss it because I grew up there. But I didn’t die, so I could always go back.’

Jamelia also discussed her decision to leave Hollyoaks, despite not being one of the 20 characters axed in the masses.

When asked by her daughter how she felt about no longer going to work at the Liverpool-based soap, Jamelia said: ‘I know I should be like, “Oh, quite sad,” but I’m not at all.

‘I think working in that way has definitely made me appreciate how valuable my time is.’

She went on to reveal that, with a six and one-year-old at home, she feels grateful to be able to spend time with them.

‘Now that I’ve left Hollyoaks, it kind of feels like what people describe retirement as,’ she added. ‘And I’m kind of like, “Oh my gosh, I’m getting to do it at 43.”

‘I mean, it’s not going to last long, but I’m going to treat it like, “What do you …read more
