White Sox put Tommy Pham on injured list, recall Edgar Quero — giving them 3 catchers

Outfielder Tommy Pham has one at-bat in one game with the White Sox since being acquired Aug. 31, but the team put him on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a strained left calf. Pham’s IL stint is retroactive to Sept. 3, the day after he appeared as a pinch hitter.

The Sox recalled catcher Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte, giving them three catchers on the expanded roster — four if you count Drew Romo, who’s sticking around on the taxi squad. Kyle Teel returned from a sprained ankle Friday, and the Sox kept Jake Rogers active while optioning Romo.

Quero was hitting .245/.319/.304 with one home run, 10 RBI and nine walks in 26 games with Charlotte this season. With the Sox, he’s batting .208/.279/.262 with three homers, 19 RBI and 16 walks in 65 games. This is Quero’s fourth call-up of the year, his second in the majors.

Pham, whom the Sox acquired in a minor-league deal with the Phillies, is in his second stint with the team. The 13-year veteran played 70 games for the Sox in 2024, when the team set the major-league record for losses in a season with 121.

Kay allowed five runs in 4 ⅓ innings Saturday in the Sox’ 6-4 loss to the Twins, his third consecutive start with fewer than five innings. It extended the rotation’s failure to reach six innings to 14 consecutive games.
Rogers’ experience last year with the Tigers, who blew a 10-game lead in the American League Central with 21 games left, could be invaluable for this young Sox team.
The stadium would sit alongside the Chicago River stretching from Roosevelt Road in the north to 18th Street in the south, and bordered with the river on its east side and Canal Street to its west. The company has the land under contract.
On Friday afternoon, general manager Chris Getz addressed extending the Sox’ relationships with Munetaka Murakami and Will Venable. Then during the game, Miguel Vargas and Colson Montgomery both reached 30 home runs to keep the Sox 2 1/2 games ahead of the Guardians.
