Mayor speaks out after 5 CPD officers hurt while dispersing Near West Side crowd during ‘teen takeover’

Mayor Brandon Johnson decried an early Sunday morning ‘unauthorized large gathering’ apparently involving teens that ended with a car veering into five Chicago police officers, injuring them, as they were dispersing the crowd on the Near West Side.

Police have not announced any charges Monday against the driver, 18, who was arrested.

“Unauthorized large gatherings can quickly become dangerous, and early this morning, after curfew hours, we saw that firsthand,” the mayor posted on X Sunday night.

Johnson said the people who participated in violent behavior should be held accountable, but many people, including city leaders and community members, have a responsibility to look out for young people.

“I continue to call on parents and guardians to know where their children are and to help ensure they are safe and accounted for,” Johnson said in a post on X. “There also must be accountability for the individuals who participated in the violent and reckless behavior.”

The officers were on foot at around 3:20 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Loomis Street when a blue sedan hit them, according to Chicago police. The 18-year-old male driver then ran into a CPD car, a pole and a fence before coming to a stop.

Five officers were injured and taken to nearby hospitals in fair condition. The driver, who wasn’t injured, was arrested and charges were pending. A weapon was found in the car, police said.
