Rand Paul Doesn’t Buy Trump’s Reasons for Iran War, “None Convincing”

Sen. Rand Paul

U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) delivered a frank assessment of the many — and shifting — reasons that high-ranking members of the Trump administration, including the President, have offered for the U.S. war in Iran.

Broadly considering the specified reasons for the U.S. bombings and also the numerous end goals proposed for the operation, Paul concluded: “None of them are very convincing.”

In a Fox News appearance, Paul questioned the validity of the Trump administration’s assertion that the U.S. “wants to free the Iranian people from oppression.” While Paul said he wants everyone around the world to be free, the Senator cautioned that “if our foreign policy is to free oppressed people, I’m not sure where war would end.”

Paul noted the many people who are said to be oppressed in places like China, North Korea, and Russia, among other countries. “I think that goal is too grandiose and would perpetually tie us up in war.”

Paul also questioned the “Iran is weeks away from a nuclear weapon” reason and the “they’re close to ballistic missiles that can reach the U.S.” reason — noting such claims have been made for decades.

“We were also told that their nuclear weapons were obliterated,” Paul added, referring to Trump’s claim after the U.S. bombed Iranian nuclear facilities in June. “I don’t think the arguments are valid. And I think war should be the last resort…A war of choice is not my choice,” he said.

Note: According to a recent Quinnipiac University national poll, most Americans do not support U.S. military action against Iran. However, 85 percent of Republican lawmakers do support it, with just 11 percent (including Paul) opposed.
