One of the most active teams this past offseason around MLB was the Baltimore Orioles. President of baseball operations Mike Elias made some big moves, which were necessary for the Orioles to remain competitive in the American League East.
Baltimore added some pitching, as well as making a big splash at first base. The Orioles beat out AL East rival, the Boston Red Sox, for Pete Alonso from the New York Mets. They also acquired outfielder Taylor Ward from the Los Angeles Angels in a trade.
If there is one thing that nobody in the AL East can have enough of, it’s pitching. The Toronto Blue Jays and Red Sox added some key arms in free agency. As far as the New York Yankees go, they are going to get some injured pitchers back as the season goes along. With that said, Bleacher Report pitched some trade ideas before the season began. He urged the Orioles to swing for a former National League Cy Young Award winner.
Baltimore Orioles Urged to Trade for Former Cy Young Award Winner From Miami Marlins
Baltimore was reportedly in the mix for free agent Framber Valdez, but he ended up signing with the Detroit Tigers. They signed Chris Bassitt before spring training after he spent three years with Toronto. The Orioles also traded for Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays and re-signed Zach Eflin. Is that going to be enough to compete in a tough division? That remains to be seen.
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed some trades before Opening Day, including one in which Baltimore acquires a former Cy Young Award winner, Sandy Alcantara, from the Miami Marlins. Here is the full trade proposal from Rymer,
Trade Proposal: Baltimore Orioles get RHP Sandy Alcantara; Miami Marlins get RHP Dean Kremer, 1B/3B Coby Mayo
Swapping Kremer out opens a spot for Alcantara in the Orioles rotation, but it’s hard to see Miami president of baseball operations Peter Bendix jumping to acquire Kremer. Best-case scenario, Kremer could pitch well in South Florida and maybe be flipped at the trade deadline.
As for Mayo, he is one of Baltimore’s better prospects and is a young corner infielder that Miami is looking for. The Marlins are looking for some young talent to crack the roster and make an impact. For Mayo, he might have a better opportunity to do that with Miami rather than Baltimore.
Miami Marlins Not in a Hurry to Trade Sandy Alcantara
After months of offseason rumors, Miami moved two starting pitchers in January. They sent Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs and Ryan Weathers to the Yankees. They do have some young up-and-coming arms, but Alcantara is someone they’ll likely hold onto until the trade deadline.
After surprising a lot of people in 2025, the Marlins finished just four games out of the final National League Wild Card spot. They have added some interesting pieces this offseason in free agency and through trades. They might just hold onto Alcantara to begin the season and see where they go into the summer.
That is, unless, of course, they are blown away by a trade offer for Alcantara from someone. It would likely take more for the Orioles to get a deal done than the one proposed by Rymer. However, the fit for Baltimore might be too good to pass up with the right offer.
