Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton Reveals he ‘Can’t Open a Bag of Chips’ Amid Elbow Injury

New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is still dealing with his elbow injury.

Stanton had tennis elbows in both of his elbows that he dealt with all offseason. The slugger had a full offseason of rehab, but he’s still dealing with the injury.

Speaking to Randy Miller of NJ.com, Stanton said his elbow will never be fully healthy. He also revealed he can’t open a bag of chips.

“That’ll never be the case,” Stanton said. “Not while I’m in this line of work. You have your good days and bad days, just like your mood and everything. … I can’t open a bottle. I can’t open a bag of chips … a bag of anything. That’s the way it is.”

Although Stanton can’t even open a bag of chips, he is determined to play a full season. Stanton also doesn’t regret having the surgery last season, as some expected.

“You get the surgery and you can go back to being in the general population in a few months, but my job is to put some of the most force into a batted ball,” Stanton said. … “That’s not going to be fixed in surgery, and I don’t care what any doctor says because they don’t know what’s going on. What’s written (about my elbows) is what me and the Yankees give you.”

Stanton also enters this season with a goal of improving his numbers and being healthy for all 162 games.

“That doesn’t matter,” said Stanton. “The key is get in the box. My last year overall numbers were low. I want a full season.”

Stanton Wants to Create Damage for Yankees

With Stanton disappointed in his 2025 season, he’s focused on doing damage this season.

Stanton knows he can hit for power and be a key part of New York’s success. So, the goal is to be healthy and prove he’s still an elite slugger.

“You never come into a season thinking it’s not going to be a huge season, but you let the season play out,” Stanton said. “Just get me in the box. The key is get in the box.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, meanwhile, said Stanton will get plenty of days off to keep him healthy for the entire season.

“No doubt, no doubt,” Boone said. “We did that last year. There were days he was playing where it was tough for him, but he wanted in there. There are other days he wanted to be in there and I’d say, ‘We have to stay disciplined to this because you’re so critical to us.’”

Stanton hit .273 with 24 home runs and 66 RBIs last season.

New York Adds Grichuk

With Stanton still dealing with his injury, the Yankees signed Randal Grichuk to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training.

Grichuk will compete for the fourth outfielder role and adds some more pop to the Yankees’ offense. He spent last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals and hit .228 with 9 home runs and 27 RBIs.

Grichuk has experience playing in the AL East, as he played with the Toronto Blue Jays. The slugger will look to make the roster and be an impact bench bat for New York.
