SF Giants: LaMonte Wade suffers setback; Anthony DeSclafani starts rehab assignment

SAN FRANCISCO — LaMonte Wade Jr. was supposed to report to Sacramento on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment. But on Friday, before the Giants’ series opener with the Dodgers, Wade was roaming around the home clubhouse at Oracle Park.

Wade’s planned rehab assignment was delayed at least through the weekend after the outfielder, who has missed all but 10 games this season, tweaked his hamstring while running the bases in one of the final steps before playing in games.

“It sucks, given how hard LaMonte has worked,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “We really felt good about the way this last rehab went. I don’t know if we’re at the stage where we have to consider this a real setback, but we’re going to get through the weekend before we decide what’s next.”

Wade first injured his left knee while running the bases in a Cactus League game, causing him to miss the first 25 games of the season. The inflammation in his knee flared up again May 18, after playing 10 games, and he has been sidelined ever since. He’ll be re-evaluated on Monday.

Before the scheduled start of his rehab assignment, Wade had received a series of anti-inflammatory injections in his knee.

By this week, he had started to run the bases. It was after a particularly intense running session that Wade began to feel tightness in his hamstring. Although it’s a different body part, Kapler didn’t rule out the possibility of Wade’s most recent ailment to the knee issues he’s dealt with so far this season.

“It was one of the better days he’s had in a really long time,” Kapler said. “I’m not saying anything is related to his knee in particular, but the body, it plays off of itself. … When a player is already compromised, other things are potentially compromised.”

DeSclafani starts rehab assignment

In better news, the Giants could have the services of Anthony DeSclafani available as soon as he is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on June 21.

DeSclafani (right ankle inflammation) will make his first rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Sacramento, and he’s hopeful he won’t require more than one more after that. He said his ankle is feeling good and his start Saturday “will be more of a test of the high adrenaline, getting in competition mode.”

DeSclafani, who has made only three starts this season and been sidelined since April 21, has been throwing bullpen sessions in the latest stage of his rehab. He most recently progressed to three ups and downs — about 45 pitches — on Wednesday and expects about the same in his first start with Sacramento.

“I just want to feel good and get through the innings,” DeSclafani said.

Before DeSclafani landed on the injured list, his ERA was nearly double its mark from last season — 6.08 — but the Giants believe the troubles with his right ankle, which he uses to push off with in his delivery, were a source of his struggles.

“It’ll be nice to have DeSclafani back at his best,” …read more
