A Russell Wilson revenge game against the Broncos on Sunday at Empower Field is in doubt.
Wilson, the former Denver quarterback, missed Pittsburgh’s season opener with a calf injury and head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Tuesday that “as we sit here today,” Justin Fields is preparing as the starter.
Wilson, though, has not been ruled out.
“He feels better today than he did over the weekend,” Tomlin said, adding that they’ll see how much Wilson can do in practice over the course of the week.
“But as I sit here today, we’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback,” he added in the course of a long answer. “I think that’s the appropriate way to do it. Speculation is a waste of time. Russell’s hurt. He’s not available to us.”

Tomlin said they’ll monitor Russ’ status. He’s scheduled to be limited tomorrow. They’ll “play it by ear” based on Russ’ participation and when he can participate.

Tomlin said Wilson wasn’t expected to have a full workload when the team practiced Wednesday but that he might do some work.
“Over the course of the week, we’ll be analyzing whether he’s capable of protecting himself, whether he’s capable of being productive,” Tomlin said. “When we get to those points, that’s when we’ll ponder his inclusion.”

Wilson, of course, was released by the Broncos this spring when the team decided to take on a record-setting $85 million dead salary cap figure. Wilson went 11-19 as a starter in Denver over two seasons after the team traded multiple first-round picks and multiple players for him in the spring of 2022, then gave him a massive contract extension. He never played a down on that five-year extension — it covered 2024-28 — and this year is getting paid $1.21 million by the Steelers and $37.79 million by Denver.
