You really can do Rome in a day — and this is the best way

Whizzing down the road in a convoy of brightly coloured vintage Fiat 500s is certainly a novel way to make the most of Italy’s capital.

The last time I attempted to do ‘do Rome’ in 24 hours had been during a heatwave when the temperatures hit over 40C. Every single piazza was packed with tourists and I just didn’t know where to start. Should I see the Trevi Fountain, The Colosseum, Vatican City, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon…. There’s just so much to tick off. 

I had heard so many wonderful things about Rome, but instead of falling in love with this romantic capital steeped in history and beauty, by the time my break was over, I was a hot, sweaty mess and desperate to go home.

I’ll admit that my heart didn’t jump with joy at the thought of heading back on a tight timeframe again.

This time though, thank goodness, it was a very different experience. 

If my first failed visit had taught me anything, it was do not even attempt to try and do everything. It’s impossible. Instead, pick a couple of things you really want to do and anything else is a bonus. 

For me, I really wanted to visit Vatican City (because our last attempt was a flop) and also get the the opportunity to watch the sunset over the city from a spectacular view.  

However, before I did those, I discovered my first bonus: there is a way to take in a few more sights – albeit fleetingly – and in the most fun and unique way: on a vintage Fiat 500 tour.
