Breakfast is often touted as the most important meal of the day, and for those among us who are cereal addicts, you’ll know just how crucial it is to get your fix first thing.

Finding your box empty can leave you feeling sour for the rest of the day, but discovering your favourite breakfast has been discontinued? HEARTBREAKING.

As such, many Weetabix fans have been left ‘gutted’ after the brand confirmed the fate of a popular product. And the story doesn’t have a happy ending.

Amanda Brown took to Facebook to share the news that Weetabix Golden Syrup has been axed for good. The foodie shared a post in the Discontinued and Nostalgic Snacks and Blasts from the Past group, with an email response from the company.

Amanda had enquired about the availability of the cereal, which is a wholegrain breakfast cereal made with ‘scrumptious’ Lyle’s Golden Syrup, only to be told that she likely wouldn’t find any in supermarkets anymore.

The email, from Weetabix Customer Services, reads: ‘I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, unfortunately, this product did not meet our expectations and as a result the decision was taken to permanently withdraw it from our range’.

Hundreds of people responded to the post, with many quick to proclaim that the cereal had been ‘the best’ and would be missed.

Emma Ball replied: ‘My son was heartbroken, he loved these.’ As Katie Burton Fritter wrote: ‘This was the best one!’

Similarly, Sarah Rutherford was mourning the loss, as she claimed the cereal was ‘the only one [she] actually liked’, while Judith Monckton added: ‘Well that explains why I can’t find it anywhere. Gutted.’

One other user suggested taking drastic action and reporting the change as a ‘hate crime’ in order to force Weetabix to bring the cereal back, but others had a much simpler way to recreate the product at home.

‘Just buy plain Weetabix and some golden syrup,’ said Shaughan Lord, and a few others had the same idea.

However, this was shot down by Amanda who responded that she’d already tried this and it was ‘not the same’. But Carol Quinn was all for the suggestion, saying: ‘This is what I’ve always done anyway. I also add it to Rice Krispies instead of sugar.’

A few people shared that they’d spotted boxes of the cereal in stock in shops such as B&M and Morrisons, while Ocado still seems to be selling the stuff online.
