Two 90s survival horror games can now be played on PS5 without PS Plus

Out of nowhere, the PlayStation Store has been updated so two retro games exclusive to PS Plus can be purchased separately.

While one of the incentives for paying for a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription is access to a library of retro titles from older consoles, you can usually purchase them individually from the PlayStation Store as well.

There were a couple of bizarre exceptions, though, and coincidentally they were two beloved survival horror games made for the original PlayStation by Capcom: Resident Evil Director’s Cut and Dino Crisis.

For whatever reason, the only way to access these games on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 was with a PS Plus Premium subscription. However, that’s no longer the case, as the two are suddenly available as separate purchases too.

The listings for both games on the PlayStation Store now include purchase options and they’re being sold at £7.99 each. You can view Resident Evil here and Dino Crisis here.

For context, a PS Plus Premium subscription typically costs £13.49 for a single month, though it does come with additional benefits like select game trials and cloud streaming.

There’s been no formal explanation for why these two games were only accessible through a subscription nor has any reason been given for the change.

Perhaps it was simply due to the negative reception from fans, since they weren’t being allowed to actually own these two games digitally. After all, once a subscription runs out, you lose access to the entire catalogue.

Dino Crisis particularly upset fans, who have been wanting to see it added to PS Plus since 2022. The game had initially been advertised for the service, only for said advertisements to be taken down, leaving people confused as to what was going on.

Considering Capcom has yet to make any formal plans for a new Dino Crisis or remake, despite overwhelming fan demand, this retro re-release is the closest thing fans have.

With any luck, this will mark the end of retro PlayStation games being exclusive to PS Plus subscriptions. Or at least it means any such games will only be locked to PS Plus for a limited time.
