TV legend Adam Thomas has opened up about his autoimmune disease as he reveals that he was in a great deal of pain during one of his most iconic TV appearances.

The Waterloo Road actor, 36, appeared on Lorraine on Monday to discuss his television appearance and upcoming storylines on the beloved soap.

While on the show, the pair discussed Strictly Come Dancing and the fact that Adam’s 2023 dance partner Luba Mushtuk is now dancing alongside Nick Knowles.

‘It was the scariest time as well Lorraine don’t get me wrong! But it was unbelievable to get out there and dance in front of millions and just to learn something new,’ he said reflecting on the experience.

He was then asked if his appearance on the show was hindered by his rheumatoid arthritis.

‘Yeah, it was tough it was demanding because I was on my feet, I was doing twists and twirls, and it was painful, to say the least. But you know what, like credit to myself that I got through that.’

Although he was in pain he added that he was key to getting stuck into the show, and will continue to use his platform to talk about the disease.

‘It’s all about stepping outside your comfort zone and doing something you’ve never done before, and I wanted to do it – in pain or not.’

He added: ‘There are not many people talking about it, again like yourself, I always thought that it’s something that people get later on in life but anyone can get it. No matter what age you are.

‘And I just wanna help and try and use my platform to talk about it a bit more and try and help people.’

The autoimmune disease is incurable and is caused when your ‘immune system (which usually fights infection) attacks the cells that line your joints by mistake, making the joints swollen, stiff and painful’.

The actor works on the show with some of his family members, and said it was a dream come true to have them on set.

‘My niece plays my daughter and my son plays my son, those opportunities don’t come often so I’m embracing all of it,’ he said.
