The Tories ‘can no longer support’ two Conservative Party candidates accused of betting on the timing of the General Election.

A party spokesperson confirmed the news today, saying it took the decision based on internal inquiries.

A Conservative Party spokesman said today: ‘As a result of ongoing internal enquiries, we have concluded that we can no longer support Craig Williams or Laura Saunders as Parliamentary Candidates at the forthcoming General Election.’

The scandal has overshadowed the Conservative Party’s campaign, with The Daily Telegraph reporting that police told journalists who were being investigated.

But the Met Police denied doing so, with one senior police source dubbing it a ‘poor distraction technique’.

Tories under the magnifying glass of the Gambling Commission include party candidates, a campaign director and the ruling party’s chief data officer.
