Tesco fans rejoice, as your go-to supermarket has just been revealed as the cheapest in the UK for buying branded wine! But there is a bit of a catch…

The retailer won’t be the cheapest for all shoppers, as only those who have a Clubcard will benefit from lower prices.

If you don’t have a membership to the company’s point-based loyalty scheme, then Tesco is actually the most expensive supermarket when it comes to wine.

This is according to new research by the consumer champions at Which?, who found that 13 out of 15 popular branded bottles of wine are cheaper with a Clubcard, costing £108.43 in total.

But without that card, you’ll be spending on average 11% more for the same bottles (£120.67), and in some cases this can rise up to 16% more, as prices fluctuate.

Which? tracked the prices of 15 readily available bottles of wine, including Barefoot Pinot Grigio, La Vieille Ferme Rosé, and 19 Crimes Australian Red, at six top supermarkets (Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose) between February and April 2024.

Like Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Waitrose all offer member-only discounts, but these retailers were found to be less likely to offer savings on wine, making them more expensive.

Asda proved the second cheapest, costing just £2.57 more on average than Tesco’s Clubcard total (£111.16).

And white wine fans might be interested to learn that the supermarket also offered the lowest prices on bottles of Yellow Tail Pinot Grigio and Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc.

For those with a Tesco Clubcard, the most expensive retailer on the list was Ocado, which many people visit to shop M&S products online. The total for the 15 bottles of wine there was £119.16.

Speaking about the findings, Ele Clark, Which? Retail Editor, said: ‘Our research highlights the challenge shoppers face if they want to find the best value wine. There are several deals in Tesco if you have a Clubcard, but if you don’t have one or forget it when you pop out for a bottle, you could end up paying up to 16% more.

‘When buying wine it is worth shopping around to get the best price, especially if you have a specific brand in mind.’
