A teenage girl wearing all pink including a shower cap managed to drive off in an empty train and take it on a joyride, before crashing.

The 17-year-old and a companion are accused of breaking into a New York City subway train at the Briarwood station in Queens and somehow managing to start the engine.

CCTV footage showed the pair walking inside an occupied car just after midnight last Thursday.

‘Two unidentified individuals entered an unoccupied train and operated it, causing a collision and damage to the train,’ stated the New York Police Department on Tuesday.

No one was injured.

It was ‘an extremely foolish and reckless act’, said New York City Transit Authority interim president Demetrius Crichlow.

They drove the train about 50 feet, or 15 metres.

‘It’s unclear at this point the experience of these two individuals, where they got it,’ said Crichlow.

Security cameras are being installed ‘aggressively’ to prevent similar incidents in the future, he said.

The girl, of medium build and wearing a crop top, hotpants and a bag, has been arrested and charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

But her accomplice remains at large. He is described as wearing a blue tank top, red shorts, a black backpack and having a slim build and light complexion.

It was not immediately known how much damage they caused.

Anyone with information on the weird incident is urged to contact the police department.

It happened eight months after another train was similarly stolen at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue station in Queens. No one was injured and there was no damage inflicted, and authorities believed that the suspect or suspects used a stolen key.

A similar incident occurred in January 2013 when a woman in her early 20s stole an empty train and drove it out of Stockholm, Sweden, before it derailed and struck an apartment building.
