Star Wars Jedi 3 will be the last one as EA tease final Cal Kestis adventure

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – just released on PS4 and Xbox One, as it happens (EA)

The sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be the third and final entry in the series, as EA confirm it is already well into development.

2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was an important video game. Not only was it the first high quality single-player Star Wars game of the modern era but it was successful enough that it convinced EA that single-player games in general are still a viable proposition.

As ever, it didn’t take long for their commitment to story-led games to waiver, but according to EA ‘over 40 million Star Wars fans have connected with Cal Kestis and his arc of becoming a powerful Jedi’. They didn’t say anything about how many games they’ve sold though, so that’s no doubt taking into account subscription services like EA Play and Game Pass.

What they did say, during an investor presentation, is that ‘Respawn is working hard to bring the final chapter of this thrilling story to players.’ Which is confirmation that it’s only going to be a trilogy, at least as far as protagonist Cal Kestis goes.

Although series creator Stig Asmussen has since left developer Respawn, and won’t be involved with the third game, his intention was always that it should be a trilogy – which implies he had at least a general story plan in mind.

What that means for the fate of Cal Kestis is unclear, but actor Cameron Monaghan has previously indicated he would like to play the character in live action.

No doubt he would but that comment was made before Disney started cracking down on spending on Disney+, although the results of that change in policy won’t be felt for a few years yet.

EA gave no indication of when the third game, which has not been announced publicly, might be released, but there were four years between Fallen Order and Survivor.

Asmussen’s exit may have slowed development down but that means there’s a reasonable expectation that the final entry in the trilogy might be out in 2027.

What happens after that though is a mystery, as while EA started off with having the Star Wars licence all to themselves it’s now shared amongst many different publishers.

Back in 2022 EA announced not only Star Wars Jedi 3 but a strategy game – that has never been mentioned again – and an unnamed first person shooter. This was later rumoured to be a tie-in to The Mandalorian and was supposedly cancelled when EA laid off hundreds of staff earlier this year.

Even in 2022 it was rumoured that these would be EA’s last Star Wars games and so far there’s been nothing to contradict that.

EA’s decisions may be influenced by the apparent underperformance of Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, while the status of other Star Wars games remains uncertain.
