Viewers of Saturday Kitchen were left shocked and appalled as celebrity chef Jay Rayner unveiled his latest ‘masterpiece’ – Monster Munch crisps on cabbage.
On the latest episode, host Matt Tebbutt was joined by chefs Jay, Poppy O’Toole and Jeremy Lee, with Sara Cox appearing as a special guest.
Taking to the kitchen, cook and restaurant critic Jay, 58, revealed his recipe for Hispi cabbage – which involved the surprising use of a packet of crisps.
The recipe is Jay’s take on a Cantonese XO seasoning – traditionally a spicy seafood sauce originating from Hong Kong. To replicate the flavour he uses three different packets of crisps – bacon rasher snacks, scampi puffed corn crisps, and pickled onion crisps (Monster Munch, to you and I).
Smashing the crisps up and combining them with seafood, herbs and spices to make a fine ‘rubble,’ the concoction was then added to his charred cabbage.
Regarding the recipe with horror, viewers took to social media in the aftermath to share their disgust.

After the recipe was shared online, cobham_lee wrote on X: ‘Looks rank that.’
‘Ewww that looks vile ????’ said apuforu.

Jay’s crisp controversy seems positively harmless in the wake of last week’s outrage – in which one guest came under fire for her supposedly ‘inappropriate’ outfit.
Last Saturday morning, cafe co-owners Kate Carter-Larg and Sam Larg appeared alongside broadcasting legend Sir Trevor McDonald and other guests.
During their toastie-making demonstration, some viewers became overly concerned with what she was wearing – making a series of highly judgemental remarks about her sleeveless top.

In response, Kate hit back at the cruel reactions that viewers had to her outfit.
‘If you know me in real life or look at our social media page, I literally wear a strapless top all the time as I live by the beach,’ she told the Daily Star.
‘It’s not like I wore a thong and nipple tassels – but that’s how everyone is reacting. I thought I was going on TV to show off our toasties – I didn’t even think about my arms being on show!’
Those hoping that today’s episode of the show might address its viewers’ overly harsh criticism were left disappointed, as last week’s furore went unmentioned.
