It’s the fourth Thursday in November, which means it’s Thanksgiving 2024.
The celebration is a national holiday in America, where families and loved ones get together to give thanks and show gratitude.
The festival dates back to 1621, when the English colonists, known as the Pilgrims, who had previously arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts aboard the Mayflower, shared a harvest feast with the Wampanoag people.
Without the help of the Native people, it’s likely the Pilgrims would never have survived settling in America.
Today, Thanksgiving is marked by a turkey dinner, parades, and American football. The day after is Black Friday, a huge shopping event which has now made it across the pond to the UK.
Thanksgiving isn’t widely celebrated on our shores, but we can still share in some kind social media sentiment and goodwill wishes.
So, wherever you’re giving thanks and showing gratitude around the world today, here are some Thanksgiving quotes, messages, and greetings to share in celebration.
Is Thanksgiving controversial?
For some Americans, Thanksgiving is a difficult day.
While the holiday celebrates the alliance between the English colonists and the Native tribe, this relationship quickly broke down.
In the years after the harvest feast that Thanksgiving celebrates, the arrival of the Pilgrims led to the mass killing of Native American people. Their lands were seized, people were enslaved and European diseases wiped out communities.
As such, some people chose to recognise the fourth Thursday in November as The National Day of Mourning instead, which aims to educate people about Native American heritage.
