Developers have supposedly been called in to talk to Nintendo this week, as rumours persist of an imminent Switch 2 reveal.

Nintendo has always had a strained relationship with conventional logic, but if you were to guess when they were going to announce their next gen console (bearing in mind they said they’d do it before April) you’d assume it was going to be early next year, not right now when it could negatively affect Christmas sales of the current Switch.

But over the last few weeks there’s been a constant stream of rumours that an announcement is imminent, perhaps within the next few weeks or even days. There’s never been any proof and yet the rumours still continue…

And so it is that today’s whispers have centred around continued talk of a new Nintendo Direct and the suggestion that Nintendo of America has been having meetings with multiple developers.

What are the latest Nintendo Switch 2 rumours?

Assuming the Switch 2, as it’s nicknamed by fans, is no more than a year away at this point, and potentially much less, every major publisher and developer must already know the basics of its design and roughly when it’ll being released.

If it is just months away from launch then even relatively small companies must be in the know by now or otherwise, without a headstart, it would take them years to produce anything for the new console.

There is some evidence for this, with My Time At Portia developer Pathea Games referring to the sequel being released on ‘future Nintendo platforms yet to be announced.’

That’s the first time a third party company has ever referred to the Switch 2 directly and if more follow in the coming weeks then you’ll know it’s because Nintendo gave them permission (and if they don’t, you’ll know that Pathea Games are in deep trouble).

According to insider Liam Robertson ‘a lot’ of developers met with Nintendo of America this week, which was partially corroborated by Limited Run Games CEO Josh Fairhurst, who even took a photo of himself outside the Nintendo offices.

Something is going on, but whether it’s smaller developers’ first introduction to the console or a warning of its imminent reveal is impossible to say at the moment.

Will there be a Nintendo Direct this month?

At the same time, Chris Dring of GamesIndustry.biz and Andy Robinson of VGC have been making it very clear that they expect a Nintendo Direct this month. That in itself is no guarantee of a Switch 2 reveal but if it doesn’t talk about the new console then it’ll likely be a fairly unexpecting presentation – in terms of new announcements – and not the sort of thing …read more
