Will Ferrell has got Netflix viewers ‘sobbing’ at the trailer for his new documentary, Will & Harper.

In the documentary, the US comedy legend, 57, teams up with his friend Harper Steele as the pair embark on a 17-day road trip around the United States.

However, their journey is set against the backdrop of the aftermath of the Covid pandemic – and Harper’s emotional journey through her gender transition.

Years ago, Will and Harper worked together on Saturday Night Live, of which Will was a star from 1995 to 2002, before heading out on his own comedy career.

Harper joined SNL at the same time as Will – literally in the same week – but stayed on until 2008. The two reunited to write Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

During the pandemic, Harper reached out to Will and many of her other friends and told them of her intentions and feelings – from there, Will & Harper was born.

Originally released as part of the programme at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, Will & Harper will come to Netflix on September 27.

And the trailer has left viewers feeling incredibly emotional, with Caitie Delaney posting on Twitter that ‘sobbing at the trailer [is] always a good sign’.

In the two-minute clip of footage from the documentary, Will reads a letter from Harper, informing him that she plans to transition and live as a woman.

We’re then shown clips of them travelling across as America when Harper greets her homeland for the first time, as like Will says, a ‘brand new version’ of herself.

On Twitter, @LikeChrisss said: ‘This trailer is heartwarming! It’s hard to put into words just how significant this documentary is, it has the potential to make a really huge positive impact.’

@Sentient_Dorito saw value in the documentary’s creation: ‘Will Ferrell being a huge visible ally to trans people is cool as f**k because so many straight boys I know idolize him and quote his movies constantly.’

Meanwhile, @Ranting_Trans commented: ‘This is actually one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen. Treating your bro like she’s still your bro, even though she is no longer “a bro” is the best thing a bro to a trans woman can do.’

The documentary currently has a 100% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a limited run in American theatres planned for later this month ahead of its Netflix premiere.
