If you were born in the 90s, chances are you will have grown up drinking Nestlé’s Nesquik, a powder you mix with milk to create a tasty milkshake.

The retro drink came in three flavours, chocolate, banana, and strawberry, and is still going strong today.

However, fans of the treat have been left fuming after the recipe was recently changed, as they claim it left the milkshakes with a ‘weird texture’.

Nestlé tweaked the recipe to remove maltodextrin, a highly processed white powder made from corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat.

In its place, they added rice flour which some say left an unpleasant ‘sludge’ in their drink.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), many shared complaints, with @0h_Rome begging the company to change the formula back, writing: ‘Pls change the recipe back, the strawberry milkshake powder clumps together at the bottom of the glass and has a weird texture.’

Similarly, @ItsJayP01 said: ‘Fix the banana and strawberry flavour it leaves a sludge in the bottom of the glass doesn’t dissolve.’ As @DanLodge4 branded the new recipe ‘horrible’, saying: ‘Just had a Nesquik for the first time in about 10 years. Horrible powdery after texture, someone’s put rice flour in it? Bulking it up with rice flour!’

Meanwhile, @JimR123 labelled the change ‘nasty’, saying he wouldn’t buy strawberry Nesquik again until the old recipe was reinstated, and @paigeleaannex agreed, saying it was ‘disgusting’.

Over on Reddit, u/Zedsee99 said that Nesquik was ‘broken’ because of the change, while another said the drink had been ‘ruined’.

And u/Rebs_C added: ‘I thought it was going mad! I’ve been drinking Strawberry Nesquik every morning since the early 90s and this week I’ve had to down as much as I could to take my tablets thinking it was the different brand of milk! I could cry! 30 years I’ve been drinking it with no problem.’

Nestlé is aware the ingredient swap has ‘not been popular’ with customers and has apologised in a statement.

A spokesperson for Nestlé told Metro.co.uk: ‘Our aim is always to have the best possible recipe on the market and we sometimes make changes that aim to improve on existing recipes.

‘On this occasion the change has not been popular with consumers and we have listened to their feedback.’

They went on to confirm that they …read more
