A Mexican boxer was handed a four-year ban for a positive drug test only for anti-doping officials to discover the fighter had died three months prior.
Moises Calleros tested positive for cocaine in a post-fight drugs test following his fight with British flyweight Galal Yafai in April last year.
Calleros lost the bout via a fourth-round TKO and was subsequently handed a four-year ban by the UK Anti-Doping Agency (Ukad) in a statement on Monday.
It read: ‘Anti-Doping Rule Violation! Mexican Professional Boxer Moises Calleros has been banned for four years, following Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) for the presence and Use of Prohibited substance, cocaine and its metabolite.’
However, Ukad was forced to swiftly delete the announcement and issue a new statement after it emerged that the 34-year-old had, in fact, tragically passed away in March earlier this year at his home in the Mexican city of Monterrey.
Apologising for the mistake, the agency said: ‘UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has today received information regarding the death of Mexican professional boxer Moises Calleros.
‘UKAD received this information shortly after publishing details of the outcome from a case concerning Mr Calleros in accordance with the UK Anti-Doping Rules.

‘Unfortunately, UKAD had no information regarding Mr Calleros’ sad passing at the time of publication and has now removed all details of this case from its channels.’
Calleros’ exact cause of death is unknown, but his passing came just three months after his last fight, a first-round knockout victory over Gerardo Verde.
Calleros held a professional record of 37-11-1 in a career that stretched back to 2008.
In 2018, the Mexican challenged for a world title but fell short in his attempt to claim the WBO minimumweight title, losing to Japan’s Ryuya Yamanaka in Kobe.
He also had notable bouts against former world champions Julio Cesar Martinez, Jose Argumendo and Francisco Rodriguez.
