Manchester United and Erik ten Hag have held constructive talks over extending the Dutchman’s deal at Old Trafford.

The club decided to stick with Ten Hag earlier this month, following discussions with other managers such as Thomas Tuchel.

The former Ajax boss saved his job with victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25th but the club still held an extensive post-season review.

It was decided that Ten Hag is the best man for the job but he has just one year left on his deal at the Theatre of Dreams.

United therefore want to extend his deal to provide stability but negotiations are ‘complicated’ as the club wishes to alter Ten Hag’s role.

When Ten Hag was appointed in 2022, he was appointed as manager and told he would be given almost free rein over the club’s transfer business.

That’s resulted in poor signings such as Antony and Andre Onana.

However, the club wish to make Ten Hag a first-team coach and to give him a reduced role in the club’s transfer business.

How this looks is still to be defined, with Ten Hag likely to insist on being given a veto on any player the club wishes to sign or sell.

Once a deal is agreed, United will look to appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy as a first team assistant.

The Dutchman has held talks with Burnley over replacing Vincent Kompany, who joined Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

As part of United’s decision to keep Ten Hag, they wanted to make changes to his backroom staff.
