Jonathan Majors has been cast in his first major role since his domestic violence conviction.

The 34-year-old Marvel actor was convicted of assault and aggravated harassment on his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari in December last year, and has vehemently denied all allegations.

Majors was found guilty of two of the four domestic violence charges against him, and in April he was sentenced to a year-long domestic violence treatment program.

The Devotion star was promptly dropped by Marvel and Disney, and he has now landed the lead role in upcoming movie Merciless.

As revealed by Deadline, he will play a CIA interrogator in the film, which is being helmed by Martin Villeneuve, brother of Dune: Part Two, Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival director Denis Villeneuve.

The supernatural thriller is being produced by Christopher Tuffin, who has produced other box office hits like last year’s Sound of Freedom.

More details will be revealed at Toronto International Film Festival in September, but Tuffin said the project ‘refuses to let the court of public opinion and selective prosecution undermine great art and artists’.

The producer has defended casting Majors in the film, and described his casting as ‘an honour and a privilege’.

He added: ‘In graduate school, I had the good fortune to study screenwriting under Blacklist scribe Millard Lampell and learned from him the dangers of letting politics undermine due process and deprive artists of their careers.

‘I consider it an honour and a privilege to be working with Jonathan who is such a great talent now that this matter has been adjudicated.’

Merciless will follow Majors’ character John as in a story of ‘possession, revenge and personal justice’.

Tuffin added: ‘Merciless intertwines themes of possession, revenge and personal justice within a haunting narrative.

‘It explores the psychological descent of John, played by Majors, and the supernatural forces challenging his sanity.’

In April, Judge Michael Gaffey also ordered for Majors to attend continued therapy, and issued a permanent order of protection for Jabbari – banning the actor from making any contact with his ex.

He could spend time behind bars if he violates those terms, or fails to complete the full length of the program.

Majors was charged after Jabbari sustained minor injuries to her head and neck in an incident which allegedly took place in the backseat of a car in New York last March.

Following a court trial, he was found guilty of assault by recklessly causing physical injury, as well as harassment, while the jury declined to convict him on charges of aggravated harassment …read more
