EastEnders fans were left seeing double this week as a moment involving Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) sparked hilarity.

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Phil’s secret twin hiding in the background of a scene during Monday’s episode.

Phil was catching up with his ex-wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) in the café as he helped her track down Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton).

In the back of one shot, you could see a background actor enjoying reading a paper, who bore more than a passing resemblance to Walford’s resident hard man.

Posting on a thread on Reddit, one fan posted a screenshot and wrote: ‘I’m seeing double!’

Another joked: ‘Phil and Bill.’

‘Copy and paste, Phil Mitchell edition,’ another said.

A fourth joked: ‘They use the other guy if Steve is absent from work.’

While we don’t think EastEnders is planning out a ‘secret twin’ plot line for Phil, it was recently speculated his actual on-screen brother Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) could return as part of Phil’s unfolding storyline.

The soap is lining up an emotional and heartbreaking Christmas for the character, who is becoming increasingly isolated.

As the residents of Walford celebrate the festive season, Phil will suffer suicidal thoughts amid his loneliness.

Speculating Grant – who last appeared in 2016 – return, a source told The Sun: ‘Could Grant be the one to save him (Phil)? It’d be a ratings hit.’

Meanwhile, it has also been heavily rumoured that Ross will front a documentary series celebrating 40 years of EastEnders next year.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and from 6am on iPlayer.
