Harry Kane is expected to be in the Bayern Munich team when they take on Aston Villa in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The England captain took a knock to the ankle in Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, replaced by Thomas Muller late in the game.

There was immediate concern that he could miss the trip to England in midweek, although he quickly sounded confident that he would recover.

‘It was painful, but it’s not too bad,’ Kane said on Saturday. ‘We’ll investigate it further tomorrow, but I expect that I’ll be able to play against Aston Villa.’

The 31-year-old has been in training since picking up the ankle issue, and while he would not confirm that his star striker would play at Villa Park, manager Vincent Kompany sounded very positive.

‘I think you have seen Harry was on the pitch today, that went well but we will still have to wait until tomorrow and see how the situation is and then we will make the correct decision,’ Kompany said on Tuesday.

‘He trained with us today and hopefully everything will work out fine.’

Kane has enjoyed a superb start to his second season at Bayern, scoring 10 goals in his first seven appearances.

On his one Champions League outing so far this campaign the former Tottenham star scored four in a 9-2 rout of Dinamo Zagreb.

Kompany is expecting a tougher test when he arrives at Villa Park, though, having been very impressed by Unai Emery’s side.

‘I think everything Aston Villa do is very clear,’ Kompany said. ‘They’re very well organised. You can see what they want to do in every phase of the game. They’re compact.

‘It’s a similar style to Bayer Leverkusen. Being compact between the lines, how they pose a threat on the counter and the runs they want to make in behind. They do that very well, which is why they did so well last season.

‘Everyone knows it’s been over 40 years since Aston Villa last played in the European Cup. What they did last season was extraordinary. They’ve earned it. They’re a really organised team with a good atmosphere at home. But Bayern are used to these nights. We want to enjoy it, and the players are hopefully up for playing here.’
