The operator of the UK’s most recognisable restaurant brands has collapsed into administration.

TGI Fridays’s operating firm Hostmore is scrambling to sell 87 chains across the country.

The American-themed diner opened its first UK restaurant in 1986 and went on to become a staple destination for cocktail nights and parties.

But its collapse comes after a deal to buy it for £177million fell through earlier this month.

Joint administrators Teneo says it is trying to sell the UK restaurants to new owners with the aim of completing by the end of September.

A successful deal would save thousands of jobs.

However, Teneo said earlier this month it was not expecting to ‘recover any meaningful value’ from the sale of sites.

TGI Fridays has 128 restaurants in the US and has a presence in more than 270 countries around the world.
