Justin Stevenson was driving through Fort Alexander, Canada, with wife Danielle Daniels-Stevenson last month [May 14] when they spotted bright lights above the Winnipeg River. The 49-year-old pulled over at a clearing where Danielle, 32, filmed two 'sun-like' balls of light floating above the treeline without making a sound. A couple in Canada have been left puzzled after spotting pulsating lights ‘as bright as the sun’ hovering above a river.

Justin Stevenson, 49, said he ‘felt like he was in a sci-fi movie’ after he and his partner Danielle, 32, spotted the strange phenomenon while driving alongside a road near the Winnipeg River in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

The sighting reportedly took place last month, and prompted the couple to stoptheir car to get a better look at the strange anomalies, which looked like two suns.

Justin can be heard wondering what the weird lights were, before questioning if it might be extra-terrestrial in nature.

On video he said: ‘I think we’re seeing some aliens, for real.’

But could it be a UFO?

The couple then see another set of bright objects appear in the sky, near the original pair and liken it to a fire.

Although he also observes the illuminations ‘look like flares’, Danielle queries if flares last that long.

But by the end of the clip, the couple are left with no answers.

What do people mistake for UFOs?

Light is a funny thing and can often play tricks on perception. Back in April, a man spotted a sudden green flash on the horizon lasting no longer than two seconds.

This happens when the Earth’s atmosphere causes light from the Sun to separate, or refract.

As the sun’s light, which appears pure white, passes through a prism, the light refracts and creates a stunning flash that is visible to the human eye.

And in May, people in Boston were greeted with a mysterious neon blue cloud. However, that turned out to be a cloud in front of the Fore River Bridge.

Now in June, another UFO phenomenon seems to be light playing more tricks.

As the Stevenson’s zoom into the light sitting above the horizon, there is a lens flare that suddenly appears making the light more stretched out than it actually is.

However, a similar thing is happening here as with the green flash, and it’s a rare optical illusion that where light bounces around in the sky.

These mirages appear when particles in the atmosphere refract, or bend light – and this often occurs as the sun is rising or setting through a ‘thicker’ atmosphere, which seems to be the case here.

Dust, gases and particles can twist light in ways that don’t always make immediate sense which can lead people puzzling over if they spotted a UFO.
