The deadline to register to vote in California and other important dates for the upcoming election


County elections offices will soon be sending California households a vote-by-mail ballot for the Nov. 5 election, but you must first be an active registered voter. If you haven’t registered yet, there is still time.  You also have the option to vote by mail or in person. Here are some key dates and what you need to know:

Deadline to register to vote

Monday, Oct. 21 is the last day for voter registration online and the last day the mail-in registration can be postmarked.

Tuesday, Nov. 5 (Election Day) is the last day to register to vote in person at a county elections office, polling place or vote center. Voters may register and cast a ballot at the same time.

Last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot

Tues, Oct. 29 is the last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot from your local elections office if you have not received one.

Early voting by mail

Vote-by-mail ballots can be returned by mail, at a drop-off location or your county elections office. Tues, Oct. 8 is when ballot drop-off locations open.

Early voting in-person

Monday, Oct. 7 is the first day of early in-person voting at county elections offices.
