Los Gatos Lions Club awards scholarships to local students

The Los Gatos Lions Club awarded $11,000 in scholarships to 10 Los Gatos High School seniors earlier this month. Adam Minyard and Sarah Drabkin won scholarships established in memory of Los Gatos High football coach Charlie Wedemeyer, and Lucia Greenland was awarded a scholarship named in honor of late principal Ted Simonson. Amanda Kapok was awarded the Destro Scholarship, earmarked for a student headed for a career in medicine or nursing.

Liam Amburgey, Natalie Lane, Rachel Steohens, Dana Hathaway, Claire Galbo and Ruah Flynn received general scholarships at the club’s June 12 meeting.

Town manager Laurel Prevetti named Cheryl Parkman as Los Gatos’s new human resource director. Parkman’s start date with the town is July 8.

Parkman grew up in Los Gatos and brings over 14 years of local government experience to her hometown. She served as a management fellow for the town early on in her career before working for the City of San Jose in various capacities. Her most recent role for that city was as an assistant to the city manager in the capacity of employee relations manager.

“Ms. Parkman demonstrated a deep understanding of Los Gatos, the breadth of the human resources profession and the ability to work collaboratively with our high-performing staff team,” Prevetti said in a release.

Summer reading challenge

The Los Gatos Library’s summer reading challenge is underway. Participants can log their reading online and will be eligible to win prizes and attend events.

Registration for the summer reading challenge is open through July 31. Interested participants can register at https://www.losgatosca.gov/2828/Los-Gatos-Public-Library

The library’s Chartreuse Caboose bookmobile will be in the Town Plaza Park on July 9 and 24 to distribute prizes and accept in-person registrations for the reading challenge.
