Call to remake court
proves Lee is unfit
Re: “Lee urges an overhaul of Supreme Court” (Page B3, May 23).
In her call to “overhaul” the U.S. Supreme Court Barbara Lee follows the playbook of typical South American dictators: First, vilify the courts with baseless accusations, then stack the legislative bodies with like-minded cronies, and then stack the court with hand-chosen puppets. Next Lee will be saying how the U.S. Constitution needs to be “modernized,” which can’t happen until the Supreme Court is firmly under the control of Congress.
The separation of powers is a pillar of our democracy, without which the ruling party gains unlimited power. It is Lee and the progressives who are the very real and sinister threat to our democracy, who want to silence any opposition and put more power into the hands of the federal autocrats.
Lee is unfit for any political position, and it would be a great travesty if Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed her to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Why weren’t workers
in Mason case charged?
Re: “Probe coming in death of young girl” (Page A1, May 24).
Thank you for investigating the horrible death of this child. The question is why there are no criminal charges against the three social workers who ignored the situation?
There have been other cases, not this bad, with child protective services in California. If criminal charges are filed, the misdeeds would stop.

Republicans’ debt plan
relies on chaos and lies
A little civics lesson as regards the debt ceiling:
Any spending that would be proposed and voted on would come from the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Republicans. If Kevin McCarthy and his Phi Beta Kapa Republicans don’t want any more spending, don’t send any spending bills to the Senate.
Also, the Democrats passed the debt ceiling increase three times under Donald Trump: no theatrics even though the debt increased by $7.8 trillion under Trump.
The Republicans’ strategy is theatrics, lies and chaos.

Overpopulation poses
host of global threats
As we hurtle toward 8.5 billion people, when are we going to launch an overdue “Manhattan Project” to curb overpopulation? Deforestation means stressed bats, carrying more virus — another pandemic on the way. What does it take? When do we learn?
Our antiquarian, agrarian tax codes, from when more babies meant more hands to work the family farm, half of all children not living past age four, need to be revised favoring those having “one or none,” and adopting over breeding. We’ve heard “the best pets come from the pound.” If only that view spread to bipeds, we and the animals raised for consumption and companionship would be among the few mammals not facing extinction by this century’s end.
The consumer-driven media’s blackout on overpopulation continues, pandering to advertisers whose business model is so weak it depends on evermore buyers and cheap labor. Yet every nation with a declining birthrate enjoys high per capita GDP.
