Big Basin Cafe, a fixture in the Saratoga Village, has a new owner.
Jay Wong, a local who was born and raised in the West Valley, took over the coffee shop at 14471 Big Basin Way on June 1.
“I think it’s a good opportunity, good business, has a good foundation, and just overall, [I] love the store,” he said.
Loyal customers of the cafe need not worry, as Wong plans to keep the menu the same for the time being, but is leaving the possibility open for changes in the future.
“Later on we may change up products every now and then to sort of refresh things a little bit, but I can’t really make any like promises or anything like that,” he said.
The cafe is not currently accepting online orders via its website at mybigbasincafe.com, but Wong said the interruption is only temporary as he works on establishing a new domain and website.
Wong’s arrival as the new owner of the cafe comes as the city has embarked on an effort to improve economic vitality in Saratoga’s commercial areas, including the Village. The effort is being led by an ad hoc committee, which hosted a community meeting in early June to hear community input on the matter.

Wong said for now he doesn’t plan to get involved in the effort, as he’s just settling in and doesn’t have much time.
Wong said he’s been welcomed to the community during his early days as owner. The ownership change has come as a relief to Saratoga residents, especially as other community fixtures have recently closed their doors, like the 40-year-old Saratoga Dry Cleaners just down the street, which shuttered in April.
“Big Basin Cafe is such a great meeting place for friends to meet at all times of the day, so it is wonderful news that we will not lose it,” Jill Hunter, president of the Village Development Council, wrote in an email.
