Marlins Insider Reports Mets Have Trade Interest in Promising Starter

The New York Mets are looking to make a splash for a starting pitcher this offseason, according to multiple reports. That can either be via the free agent market, where there is plenty of quality arms available, or the Mets could opt to pull off a meaningful trade to acquire a starter.

David Stearns and the rest of the Mets front office have been involved in a few different trades so far this winter. With the hot stove rumor mill swirling, a few different MLB analysts believe that the Miami Marlins might have a pair of starters available for trade in Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera. The Mets join the Yankees and Cubs as the interested parties in Cabrera.

Marlins Reporter Indicates the Mets Interest in Edward Cabrera

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald recently reported that the Mets have inquired about trading for promising starter Edward Cabrera. Jackson also indicates that the Marlins are listening, which makes this an immediate storyline across MLB.

Edward Cabrera might even be a more intriguing trade candidate than former CY Young winner Sandy Alcantara. Cabrera is just 27, and has immense upside. New York has also been vocal about potentially being open to moving Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong, but the Marlins might be looking for bats if they are thinking about moving on from Cabrera.

In 2025, Cabrera had his best season as a pro, posting a 3.53 ERA in 137 innings of work. His career numbers are: 431.2 innings, 4.07 ERA, 478 strikeouts, 87 starts.

The fact that Cabrera could even take a step further is what also makes him an attractive offseason target. Even if the Marlins don’t trade Edward Cabrera this winter, he will certainly continue to be a subject of trade rumors throughout the spring.

Should the Mets Trade for Edward Cabrera?

The New York Mets and David Stearns should absolutely consider trading for Edward Cabrera. As of now, the top options in the Mets’ rotation are David Peterson, Clay Holmes, and Nolan McLean. McLean is young, but very promising. Peterson had a strong 2025 season, but regressed towards the end of the season.

They will continue to be linked to top free agents and top trade targets, but the Mets are certainly due for another big splash or two this offseason.

Down the stretch of the disastrous end to the 2025 season, the Mets found out who their top arms are, and it would be a big move across MLB if New York traded with its NL East rival in the Marlins on a blockbuster trade.
