The Cubs’ front office lost a key cog to another club Monday.
Jared Banner, who had worked under team president Jed Hoyer since 2020, was named the general manager of the Orioles, a step up in the baseball world after three seasons as an assistant general manager with the Cubs.
Banner, 41, has spent nearly two decades in baseball front offices, starting his career with the Red Sox in 2007, a tenure that saw him overlap with both Hoyer and former Cubs president Theo Epstein. He joined the Cubs as a vice president in charge of special projects in 2020, worked as vice president of player development in 2022 and 2023 and was named an assistant general manager in 2024.
Banner began the 2026 season as one of three Cubs assistant general managers – alongside Ehsan Bokhari and Garrett Chiado – working in Hoyer’s front office with general manager Carter Hawkins.
In Baltimore, Banner will work alongside president of baseball operations Mike Elias with the goal of returning the Orioles to prominence in the competitive AL East after a stalled rebuilding effort yielded back-to-back sub-.500 seasons following a couple trips to the postseason.
Meanwhile, Hoyer’s front office enters the offseason with its own hefty to-do list in the wake of the Cubs’ disappointing finish to the 2026 campaign, on the wrong end of sweep in the wild-card round.
It will now continue that work without Banner.
