The Willis Tower antenna will be lit in navy and orange Friday night in tribute to former coach Mike Ditka, who died earlier in the day.
The skyscraper’s web site announced the decision. Willis Tower typically lights up for special events, causes and tributes.
Ditka died at age 86 around 9 a.m. Friday.
“Mike will be missed beyond measure and remembered forever,” his family said in a statement.
Coach Ben Johnson, Bears players and NFL luminaries honored Ditka throughout the day Friday. Johnson called him the “gold standard” inside Halas Hall. His No. 89 was the last retired by the Bears.
The Bears, in a statement, said that “Mike’s impact on the Chicago Bears organization, over decades as a player, coach and proud icon and ambassador for our organization, is immeasurable.”
The Bears, who are 3-1 this season. play the rival Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday at noon.
