Two Chicago police officers wounded in shooting at Swedish Hospital; suspected gunman in custody

A man suspected of shooting two Chicago police officers Saturday morning at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital had been taken to the hospital’s emergency room for treatment by law enforcement about two hours before the shooting, according to sources.

After the shooting, the suspect was taken into custody after fleeing into the Lincoln Square neighborhood and barricading himself inside a residence, according to sources and the local alderperson.

Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) said the shooting happened about 11:30 a.m. at the hospital, 5140 N. California Ave. Vasquez said there were “multiple shots fired and two officers shot, one in critical condition.”

Law enforcement sources said the shooter disarmed one of the officers before opening fire.

The person now in custody had arrived at the hospital for treatment at 9 a.m. “In accordance with Endeavor Health public safety weapon detection protocols, this individual was wanded upon arrival,” the hospital said in a statement on X. They said he suspect was escorted by law enforcement at all times. They also said no hospital staff or patients were injured.

The gunman ran from the hospital and hid in a nearby home, sources said. Residents in the area were told to shelter in place until the suspect was taken into custody, which Vasquez said happened by 12:10 p.m.

Chicago police haven’t released details about the shooting, including the injuries and conditions of the wounded officers.

David Stevens, 22, who lives on Foster Avenue about a block from the hospital, said he was in his home when he saw squad cars rushing toward the building.

He said he walked toward the hospital and saw officers immediately begin to block off traffic.

About a dozen people were gathered near California and Foster avenues around 1 p.m., watching as tactical officers walked in and out of the hospital.

“I feel sorry for the police officers,” Stevens said. “I hope they and their families are OK.”

This is a developing story, check back for updates.
