On Friday evening, the Athletics will face off against the Chicago Cubs for their latest spring training game.
They have just four more games of exhibition before their Opening Day matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays (on March 27 in Canada).
Luis Severino Gets Major Announcement From Athletics

Before their showdown with the Blue Jays, the Athletics have announced that Severino will start on Opening Day.
He is going into his second season with the franchise.
Martín Gallegos of MLB.com wrote: “Luis Severino will start for the A’s in Toronto on Opening Day, per Mark Kotsay. This will be Severino’s second consecutive Opening Day start with the A’s and third overall.”

Severino is coming off a season where he went 8-11 with a 4.54 ERA in 29 games.
He has also spent time with the New York Mets and New York Yankees over a decade in the MLB.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote (on December 5, 2024): “Right-hander Luis Severino and the A’s are in agreement on a three-year, $67 million contract, sources tell ESPN. It is the largest guarantee in the history of the A’s franchise. And even with the qualifying offer attached, Severino got well over market expectations.”

Severino is most known for his time with the Yankees where he made two trips to the All-Star Game.
During the 2018 season, he 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 32 games.
Nick Diamond wrote (on March 16 during the WBC): “Luis Severino dominates one of the best lineups ever assembled for most of the night, aside from one bad pitch to Gunnar.
3.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K 68 pitches, 42 strikes (62%) 6 whiffs (2 FB, 0 SI, 3 SW, 1 CU)
He topped out at 99.8 early and leaves with the game tied and a chance to go to the WBC final.”

Athletics Last Season

The Athletics are coming off a season where they were the fourth-place team in the AL West with a 76-86 record.
They last made the MLB playoffs during the 2020 season when Marcus Semien and Matt Olson were still on the roster.
