SARATOGA — One person died and three others were hospitalized Thursday after an attempted traffic stop turned into a pursuit than ended in a crash, authorities said.
Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office deputies tried to pull over a white Hyundai Elantra in the area of S. De Anza Boulevard and Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino about 3:05 a.m., only to see it pull away, the agency said in a statement.

The car later crashed into a tree in the area of Saratoga Los Gatos Road and Via Colina in Saratoga.
Authorities did not identify the passenger who died and said a second passenger suffered major injuries and was in stable condition at a hospital. The driver and a third passenger were treated for injuries and were expected to be OK.
The driver also was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, misappropriation of lost or stolen property and resisting/delaying/obstructing an officer, authorities said.
The chase started when deputies determined the vehicle they spotted had been stolen out of San Jose, authorities said. They added that one of the occupants also was wearing a face mask and hoodie.
The sheriff’s office closed Saratoga Los Gatos Road in the southbound direction at Via Colina and in the northbound direction at El Camino Grande while they investigated.
