Man shot in Oakland’s Uptown district during fight 

OAKLAND — A 34-year-old Vallejo man was shot multiple times Sunday morning during a fight in the Uptown district, authorities said.

He was in critical but stable condition at a hospital where he was being treated for five gunshot wounds, according to authorities.

The shooting happened about 4 a.m. in the 500 block of 17th Street near Telegraph Avenue.

According to initial police reports, there was a physical altercation involving the Vallejo man and some other people before he was shot by one of the other participants.

Officers already in the area heard the gunfire. As they were running to the scene, they saw a man believed to be the shooter fleeing on foot, but he was able to escape.

One of the responding officers was punched by a 23-year-old Antioch man who was in the gathering crowd, authorities said. He was arrested.

A detailed description of the shooter has not  been released.

What started the fight that led to the  shooting is under investigation.

There have been other shootings, including homicides, in the Uptown district in prior  years. Most recently, in late December, a man was  wounded in a shooting. In early September, shootings left two men dead and several others wounded.
