The New York Yankees have not had the busiest of offseasons, but they still have made some moves. Their most notable move of the offseason so far was re-signing star slugger Cody Bellinger to a five-year, $162.5 million contract. This was after Bellinger thrived with the Yankees this past season, posting 29 home runs, 98 RBIs, and a .272 batting average in 152 games.
The Yankees also re-signed players like Trent Grisham, Ryan Yarbrough, Amed Rosario, and Paul Blackburn. They also acquired pitcher Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins and will be hoping that the 6-foot-1 right-hander will give their roster a nice boost.
Yet, when looking at the Yankees’ current roster, it is fair to say that it could still use some upgrades. This is especially so when noting that the Yankees are in a division that has the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles.
One area that the Yankees could certainly look to improve is their pitching rotation. It is clear that they could use another impactful pitcher, and they are now being linked to a very intriguing one who has been creating chatter in the rumor mill.
Yankees Named Early Favorite for Luis Severino at 2026 Trade Deadline
In a recent article for Bleacher Report, Tim Kelly made a handful of predictions for the 2026 MLB trade deadline. In it, he named the Yankees and New York Mets as two early frontrunners to acquire Athletics pitcher Luis Severino.
“Our guess is even though the A’s will be fun in 2026, they won’t have the pitching to contend. Facing the prospects of losing Severino in the offseason, they’ll trade him to a spot where he’s more comfortable pitching at. Severino has previously had success pitching for both the Yankees and Mets, so they feel like early favorites to land him via trade in the summer,” Kelly wrote.
With the Yankees needing another pitcher, it would make a lot of sense for them to pursue Severino if he becomes available. Severino would not only give their rotation a nice boost if acquired but also a pitcher who they are very familiar with. This is because Severino spent his first eight MLB seasons as a member of the Yankees.
In 141 games with the Yankees from 2015 to 2023, Severino had a 54-37 record, a 3.79 ERA, and 788 strikeouts. He was also an All-Star with the Yankees in 2017 and 2018. With this, he certainly stands out as a pitcher the Yankees could be willing to take a chance on again.
Severino Should Generate Plenty of Interest if Made Available
If the Athletics end up making Severino available for trade, the Yankees and Mets should not be the only teams in the mix for his services. This is because the 31-year-old is very solid pitcher when playing at his best, and contenders are always on the hunt for rotation help at the deadline.
In 29 games last season with the Athletics, Severino had an 8-11 record, a 4.54 ERA, and 124 strikeouts. This is after he had an 11-7 record, a 3.91 ERA, and 161 strikeouts with the Mets during the 2024 campaign.
