The Philadelphia Eagles might be getting a little desperate, which can lead to some pretty bold move.
Bold moves like trying to hire their next offensive coordinator away from another NFC playoff team.
“Eagles have requested to interview Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle for their offensive coordinator position,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter wrote on his official X account on Thursday. “Doyle was hired last off-season as the NFL’s youngest offensive coordinator and he previously coached under Sean Payton in New Orleans and Denver.”
The Eagles fired offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo after one season in which the offense seemed off track from the first game of the season — a year that the defending Super Bowl champions saw end with a home loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Doyle, Bears Had Breakthrough Season in 2025
Under first year head coach Ben Johnson, the Chicago Bears went from 5-12 in 2024 to 11-6 in 2025 and advanced to the NFC Divisional Round for the first time since 2010.
Doyle, 30 years old, got his coaching start as a student assistant at the University of Iowa in 2016 and made the leap to an offensive assistant to head coach Sean Payton on the New Orleans Saints immediately upon graduation in 2019.
He spent 2 seasons with Payton on the Denver Broncos as tight ends coach before coming to the Bears in 2025.
Doyle is the son of former longtime University of Iowa strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle, who was briefly hired in a similar role with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 before he resigned one day later.
Hard to Have Much Faith in Doyle as OC
If you’re surprised the Bears have an offensive coordinator, don’t feel bad. We all were.
That’s because it’s pretty much known that head coach Ben Johnson, one of the NFL’s great offensive coordinators in recent memory with the Detroit Lions, is the singular voice running Chicago’s offense.
“Bears OC Declan Doyle is the latest name to be linked to the Eagles for their job opening,” The Philly Special’s Anthony DiBona wrote on X. “Doyle could be available since he doesn’t call plays in Chicago under Ben Johnson.”
This also might speak to how desperate the Eagles are to get someone in to fill Patullo’s role. In 2024, Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore did well enough in his one season in Philadelphia he was hired as head coach of the New Orleans Saints.
“The Eagles are the only team with an existing HC that is still searching for an OC after the Bucs reportedly hired Zac Robinson (who the Eagles also interviewed),” The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff McLane wrote on Thursday. “The other four teams that made an OC change this offseason: Lions (Drew Petzing), Chargers (Mike McDaniel), Chiefs (Eric Bienemy), Commanders (David Blough). There remain eight teams that have fired their HC that still have OC openings: Cardinals, Bills, Browns, Steelers, Ravens, Raiders have yet to hire HCs, while the Dolphins and Titans have hired HCs Jeff Hafley and Robert Saleh, who have yet to fill their OC spot. The Giants with new HC John Harbaugh will reportedly have Todd Monken as OC and the Falcons with Kevin Stefanski will have Tommy Rees.”
