The Chicago Cubs made one of the biggest moves of the offseason on Saturday night, as they swooped in from out of nowhere to sign one of the top free agents available, Alex Bregman, to a five-year, $175 million contract. Bregman will immediately come in and shore up the team’s third base position, while also adding another powerful bat to their lineup.
This deal is huge for a slew of reasons, as the Cubs beat out several other big-name teams for Bregman’s signature. And now that the deal has officially been reported, new details have begun to be revealed that will surely catch the attention of Chicago fans as they celebrate the addition of another All-Star caliber player.
Cubs Get More Good News with Alex Bregman Contract
Last offseason, Bregman waited until February to sign a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox in free agency. The deal included a pair of opt-outs for Bregman, and after he put together a strong 2025 campaign (.273 BA, 18 HR, 62 RBI, .821 OPS), he decided to test the waters of free agency and see what he could get.
The market for Bregman was filled with suitors, but a return to Boston always appeared to be the most likely outcome on the surface. Instead, Bregman’s stint with the Sox will end up lasting just one year, as he will make his first foray to the National League, where he will look to help the Cubs emerge as a top World Series contender.
There’s no doubt that this is a heavy price to pay, but Bregman proved last season that he’s still one of the best third basemen in the league. And according to some new details regarding this contract that have emerged, it sounds like Chicago included some deferred money in this deal in order to help itself with its salary management.
“Per source, Bregman deal includes deferrals,” Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported. “Full details not yet known. But present-day value will be less than $175M. And annual luxury-tax charge will be less than $35M.”
Are the Cubs a World Series Contender After Signing Alex Bregman?

GettyThe Chicago Cubs have signed former Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman.
The Cubs have been busy as of late, as they pulled off a big trade with the Miami Marlins for starting pitcher Edward Cabrera just days before signing Bregman. Add in the returns of Shota Imanaga and Javier Assad, along with the addition of Phil Maton in the bullpen, and Chicago could very well be in position to take a step forward in 2026.
With Bregman on board, that likely means that Kyle Tucker will be departing in free agency, but if the team adds another impact bat or two, that may not matter. The Cubs have proven that they mean business with their signing of Bregman, and it feels like they may not be done yet, even though they have already put together a strong body of work over the past couple of months in preparation for the new season.
