Norwalk man fatally shot during fight at South Gate equestrian center

A Norwalk man was shot and killed when a fight broke out at an equestrian center in South Gate over the weekend, a detective said.

The shooting, which was reported to police around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, happened in the stable area of the equestrian center in the 5500 block of Leeds Street, Sheriff’s Lt. Christopher Oakley said.

Juan Toro, 45, attended a gathering there. At some point during the party, there was a fight and shots were fired, Oakley said.

Toro died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the medical examiner’s office.

“Most of the people fled before officers arrived,” Oakley said.

Detectives don’t know what started the fight and if Toro was involved in the dispute. Investigators don’t have a description of the suspect or suspects.

A woman who answered the phone at the equestrian center said they don’t know what happened and declined comment.

Detectives are looking for witnesses and video. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go to lacrimestoppers.org
