Marin flooding causes major 911 service disruption

Flooding in San Rafael caused a widespread telecommunications outage that disrupted 911 service for more than four hours in much of Marin County, the police department reported.

The flooding affected an AT&T hub at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to San Rafael police Lt. Scott Eberle. Emergency landline calls were diverted to the Novato Police Department, which was unaffected by the outage.

“The outage affected police department and community members’ landlines, wireless service and intercom systems,” Eberle said. “Wireless service was unavailable for several hours, and while some cellular calls were able to connect to California Highway Patrol communications, many residents experienced an inability to place calls altogether.”

The outage was resolved and 911 service was restored by 1 a.m., he said.
