Family identifies man killed in triple homicide at Oakland market

OAKLAND — A 54-year-old man who was one of three men fatally shot Saturday morning inside an East Oakland store was a loving father who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, his family said Monday.

Miguel Ramirez Rivera, who was identified by family members in an online fundraising post, was fatally shot just after 3 a.m. Saturday inside Sky Market, 8433 International Blvd., a short distance from his home.

Two other men, one 19 and the other 22, were also killed. Their names have not yet been released.

Police have said about a dozen customers were inside the store at the time of the shooting. An argument broke out that turned physical and at least one person pulled a gun and began shooting, authorities said. The two younger men died at the scene, and Ramirez Rivera died later at a hospital. No store employees were hurt.

Ramirez Rivera frequented the store regularly and according to the GoFundMe account posting by his family, “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that really is something we’re still struggling to process.”

Because no arrests have been made and the investigation is on-going, investigators have not provided a lot of details about the case, but did confirm Ramirez Rivera was not an intended target.

The GoFundMe narrative says the lives of his family have been “turned upside down” as “a result of senseless violence.”

“Our dad didn’t deserve this. He wasn’t involved in anything, just someone going about his life. He was a father, a loved one, and a man who mattered.

“The way he was taken doesn’t define who he was,” the post says. “This loss was sudden, violent, and completely unexpected. One moment he was here, and the next he was gone. No warning. No chance to say goodbye. Our hearts are broken, and we’re doing our best to lean on God to get through this pain.”

The GoFundMe account seeks $6,000 for funeral and memorial expenses the family said it was not prepared for. As of Monday morning, $5,565 had been raised.
