The Los Angeles Dodgers are coming off a second straight World Series championship. Despite winning the last two, it will be full steam ahead for a third straight in 2026. That means that they won’t leave any stones unturned when it comes to making some bold moves to upgrade their roster.
The Dodgers have some needs, but nothing major. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report listed each team’s biggest remaining holes on the roster for 2026. For Los Angeles, he listed center field and second base as a need for next season.
It centers around Tommy Edman and where he plays. If he slots in at second base for manager Dave Roberts, then the need is in the outfield. If Edman plays center, then the need would be at second base. If the need is in the middle of the infield, Reuter urges Los Angeles to target a division rival’s second baseman.
Bleacher Report Lists the Dodgers as a Landing Spot For Ketel Marte
There has been a ton of trade chatter surrounding Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte. Several of the contenders have been linked to him, including the Boston Red Sox. However, nobody has made a push for a deal until some of the other dominoes in free agency fall.
Those dominoes would be Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, the top two remaining infield free agents. Reuter sees a path where the Dodgers Marte is a backup plan for Los Angeles.
“Depending on where Tommy Edman lines up, the Dodgers’ biggest need will be to upgrade in center field or at second base. If he plays in the outfield, Hyeseong Kim could see an expanded role at second base, while Alex Call sees more action if he’s in the infield. Signing Bo Bichette to play second base or trading for Ketel Marte would be the type of swing-for-the-fences move we’ve become accustomed to from the defending champs,” wrote Reuter.
There is no doubt that the Dodgers operate every year as a team that swings for the fences. That is why they have been linked to Bichette despite not having a big need for him. Until Bichette and Bregman sign, that may hold up the trade market for Marte and Brandan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Dodgers Trading For Marte Would Be a Huge Swing For the Fences
Arizona would like to trade Marte, but they don’t want it to drag on, according to Diamondbacks insider John Gambadoro of the Burns & Gambo show on Arizona Sports 98.7.
“Nothing has changed. What I did say is the Diamondbacks do not want this to drag on much longer,” said Gambadoro. “Either they’re going to trade Ketel Marte or shut it down. If they can’t get a good enough offer, they’re not going to drag this into Spring Training. They have to move on.”
If it does indeed drag on until Spring Training, Arizona would be crazy not to listen to what the Red Sox, Dodgers, or any other contender would be willing to give up Marte. Adding Marte to a Dodgers lineup and infield would make them the odds-on favorite to repeat in 2026. It might be a long shot, but never say never when it comes to the Los Angeles front office.
