Beefing up the organization’s infrastructure has been the White Sox’ directive this offseason.
On Friday, the Sox announced they hired Carlos Rodriguez as their new assistant general manager. Rodriguez spent 16 seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, the last six as vice president. He’s had prior roles in international scouting and player development with the organization.
He departed the organization this past October to “explore other opportunities.”
“I’ve known Carlos for many years and have followed his career and impact with the Rays organization,” general manager Chris Getz said in a press release. “He’s an intelligent, thoughtful and experienced leader who has contributed meaningfully across nearly every area of baseball operations.
“From major-league season support and research and development to international operations and the execution of a new stadium build, Carlos brings a broad, operationally diverse perspective that will strengthen the White Sox at every level.”
Rodriguez joined the Rays in 2010 as a professional and international scout after four seasons as an area scout with the Blue Jays. He joins Josh Barfield and Jin Wong as assistant general managers. Rodriguez played a role in scouting and signing Vidal Brujan, Jose Alvarado, Jonathan Aranda and Christopher Sanchez.
The Sox picking an executive from the Rays is a shrewd choice to improve their front-office structure. Rodriguez was credited by the Rays with enhancing their player development system. His player development background will be critical in Chicago.
