Browns Announce Signing That Will Make Shedeur Sanders Very Happy

The Cleveland Browns are laboring through another miserable campaign in 2025, with their latest result seeing them suffer an ugly 31-3 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Bears. With a 3-11 record, the Browns are simply looking to get through their remaining three games of the regular season while keeping their players in one piece.

Perhaps the guy who has taken the biggest beating as of late is rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. With a subpar offensive line in front of him, Sanders has found himself running for his life frequently since taking over for Dillon Gabriel under center, and while the season is all but over, the front office recently signed veteran offensive lineman Wesley French to their practice squad in an effort to better protect their newest starting quarterback.

Browns Sign Offensive Lineman Wesley French to Practice Squad

It goes without saying that Cleveland has quite a few problems it will have to solve over the upcoming offseason. No matter who has played at quarterback for the team this season, though, it has struggled to protect them. During Sanders’ limited time under center, he’s already gotten sacked 13 times, which isn’t exactly ideal.

Reconstructing the offensive line is going to be easier said than done, but that’s a process the front office has decided it can get underway during the final games of the current campaign. That led the team to take a flier on French, a former undrafted free agent who has previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys.

While French is only being signed to the practice squad, he has the size (standing at 6’4) needed to become an imposing presence on the offensive line. With nothing much left to play for, the Browns decided to bring him into town and see if they could find a way to turn him into a potential contributor for the 2026 season.

“The Cleveland Browns have signed G Wesley French to the practice squad,” the team announced on its official website.

At this point in time, it seems unlikely that French will find his way onto the field for the Browns this season, as he hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2023. Still, that’s not going to stop the front office from attempting to find a diamond in the rough late in what will go down as another lost season. Even though there are still three games left in the season, all eyes are on the 2026 campaign already.

In the immediate future, though, Cleveland has to worry about another daunting matchup in Week 16, as it will take on the high-powered Buffalo Bills, who are fresh off an impressive win against the New England Patriots in Week 15. The Browns will look to do a better job of protecting Sanders under center in this one, but even if they can, pulling off an upset victory is going to be easier said than done. Kickoff for this contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
