The Miami Dolphins will look to reach .500 for the first time this season. They will do so against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. Miami has won four straight games and five out of their last six.
Prior to the game, the Dolphins added offensive lineman Larry Borom, a tackle, to the injury report. He is listed as questionable with an illness. What the illness is or how severe it is has not been made public by the team.
Miami Dolphins’ Offensive Line
The Dolphins’ offensive line has been a mixed bag this season. Their original starting five has played only three snaps on the year as free agent signing James Daniels suffered an injury in the first quarter of Week 1. Daniels has yet to return to practice. Veteran right tackle Austin Jackson also suffered an injury in Week 1. He returned two weeks ago in Miami’s matchup against the Saints.
The aforementioned Larry Borom was in charge of replacing Jackson. He started ten games while Jackson was out with an injury. Upon Jackson’s return, Borom became the team’s swing tackle, but his snaps were drastically reduced. Whether or not he’ll be active for the Monday Night Football matchup against Pittsburgh remains to be seen.
The left side of the offensive line has been completely new for Miami. Left tackle Patrick Paul is in his first full year as a starter and has been a pleasant surprise for the Dolphins. Rookie Jonah Savaiinaea struggled earlier in the year, but has improved his play as of late.
The gem of the unit has been center Aaron Brewer. Regarding Brewer, Bleacher Report analyst Brandon Thorn said “There shouldn’t be much of a discussion for 1st team All-Pro center this season with how Aaron Brewer has played and he should be on the podium for Protector of the Year. Unique player & absolute weapon.”
Miami Dolphins’ Running Game
The biggest result of the improved offensive line play has been Miami’s rushing attack. Their rushing attack has been one of the keys behind their winning formula. In their last four wins Miami has totaled 164 rushing yards or more.
Last week, Miami totaled a season-high 239 rushing yards, despite losing De’Von Achane to a rib injury halfway through the second quarter. Fortunately for Miami, Achane is set to return this week despite being limited in practice.
None of this improved rushing attack would be possible if not for solid play from Miami’s offensive line. Their six-man offensive line package has been a revelation, but if Larry Borom is unable to suit up Monday it will make life harder for the Dolphins.
Either way, Miami will try to keep their streak going in Pittsburgh. The cold weather conditions will favor the running attack, and despite quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s wishes, that’s likely the best gameplan for Miami. The Dolphins are currently 5-0 when rushing for more than 140 yards. They’re 1-7 when they run for less. The formula is there for Miami, now it’s time to see if they can execute it on Prime Time.
